Water bill reduction to ease debt advice needs?

Water bill reduction to ease debt advice needs?

- Thursday, 26 November 2009

UK water bills will decline over the next five years, it has been announced.

That is according to regulator Ofwat, which has revealed that between 2010 and 2015 the average bill will fall by between £3 and £340 before inflation is taken into account.

The news will be welcomed by consumers, particularly those who are struggling to cope with their monthly outgoings.

Indeed, people currently seeking debt help as a result of their monthly outlays could find their troubles ease and their finances improve.

Water companies had asked for the pricing thresholds to be ten per cent higher than the level Ofwat eventually opted for, and have since insisted that funding greater investment will be difficult.

However, Pamela Taylor, chief executive of industry body Water UK, said: "[Water companies] will need to make sure they can fulfil their legal obligations.

"They've got challenges ahead such as climate change, with increased drought and flooding, [and] a growing population with more homes."

Ofwat is the regulator for the water and sewerage industry in England and Wales.
