WaterSure applications increase as more people require financial help

WaterSure applications increase as more people require financial help

- Tuesday, 29 September 2009

The number of people seeking financial assistance via the WaterSure tariff in order to pay their water bill has increased, it has been revealed.

According to Ofwat, over the past two years the number of vulnerable people using the scheme has risen by 80 per cent.

The increase could be seen as an indicator to a wider recession-related public vulnerability and need for debt help.

Regina Finn, Ofwat's chief executive, said that the increase was down to people struggling to cope within the tougher economic climate and that the consumer protection agency are doing all in their power to help.

She commented: "We understand times are hard. Now more than ever customers are looking to save money on their bills.

"We have listened to what customers have told us and in July we proposed that bills should remain broadly stable for the next five years."

The WaterSure tariff, which has been running since 2000, was formerly called the Vulnerable Groups Scheme.
