'Will apathy' could increase need for debt management help

'Will apathy' could increase need for debt management help

- Thursday, 16 July 2009

More than half the UK population have not prepared a will, according to research by Which?

The survey showed that 56 per cent of people had yet to prepare a will, with 35 per cent of over-65s believing they were not necessary.

Without the legal document a number of people could, in death, jeopardise family members' financial future.

In the absence of the binding document, funds could be misallocated and potentially leave the non-beneficiaries in financial difficulty and in need of debt management help.

In circumstances of death among unmarried couples, the children inherit all of the deceased's estate, potentially leaving the partner with nothing.

Peter McCarthy, Which? Legal Service senior lawyer, said: "Our research shows that too many people are suffering from ‘will apathy' and don't get round to making a will, which could have serious consequences for those left behind.

"If you die without getting your affairs in order … your loved ones could lose out."

Briton's lose a total of £1.9 billion per year in inheritance tax, according to unbiased.co.uk.
