Workers 'may be forced to seek debt advice thanks to unfair employers'

- Wednesday, 22 July 2009

Unscrupulous employers could be forcing many of their workers to seek help with debt as they look to take advantage of the economic climate and pass a freeze on wages.

While a number of big-name businesses have argued over recent weeks that such a practice is necessary for their survival, the Institute of Employment Rights (IER) has now claimed that some companies are freezing wages unfairly.

As such, many workers already struggling with their personal finances could be left with no choice but to seek out professional debt management help.

IER director Carolyn Jones, said: "I think it's outrageous, and I do think that as in other periods of recession companies will take the opportunity to shake out and introduce lean and mean measures to slim down their companies, without any regard to the impact that will have on struggling families.

"It seems to me that workers are being asked to pay for a crisis that is not of their making."

These comments come soon after the manufacturers' association EEF reported that two in three businesses in its sector are currently freezing their workers' pay, suggesting thousands of borrowers could soon be seeking out debt advice.ADNFCR-2300-ID-19276682-ADNFCR
