World Cup tourists can 'avoid debt problems'

World Cup tourists can 'avoid debt problems'

- Thursday, 3 June 2010

Footie fans travelling to South Africa this June could become the victim of crime or fraud, which could lead to debt problems.

Bank fraud could lead to debt problems as charges could be accrued if the overdraft limit on an account is breached by a thief using a stolen debit card.

However, the Guardian has some advice on how to stay safe from crime and fraud in South Africa this summer.

The news provider states that having travel insurance that covers medical care is very important as healthcare and emergency repatriation back to the UK can amount to £25,000, which could leave some people in debt.

Nick Starling of the Association of British Insurers told the newspaper: "Making sure that you have the right travel insurance for your needs is crucial for every England fan travelling to South Africa.

"Whether travelling as part of a package or independently, all supporters should check their travel insurance before they go so that they fully understand what they are covered for."

Tourists should also protect their personal information at all times, especially passports and pin numbers.

Consumer Focus also suggests travellers should avoid using their phones in a foreign country as this can be expensive.
