Youngsters 'destined for the dole'

A new survey by the Prince's Trust has found that young people from workless families are often destined to end up on the dole in later life, which could lead to debt problems.

The survey found that 70 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds who live in a household where no one works have struggled to find a job and 18 per cent expect to end up on benefits.

Living on benefits could contribute towards debt problems if the person tries to live outside of their means and finds they cannot pay off any credit they may have obtained.

Martina Milburn, chief executive of the youth charity, said: "It is a tragedy to think that so many feel condemned to a life on benefits.

"If we fail to stop these disadvantaged young people becoming disadvantaged adults, this cycle will continue to blight these families for generations to come."

The report, which is based on interviews with 2,068 youngsters, found that people do want to work with 76 per cent stating that finding a good job is their main priority.

In June this year, BBC News reported that the number of young people not in education, employment or training had decreased by one per cent.
