Youngsters 'need to be informed about funding university'

Youngsters 'need to be informed about funding university'

- Tuesday, 12 October 2010

Youngsters considering university should be given information and advice about how to fund it as they may get into debt problems.

Dr Tessa Stone, chief executive at BrightsideUNIAID, a charity designed to help young people overcome the financial barriers to education, stated institutions need to make sure youngsters know what help is available.

She said: "It's about how you make those choices and having the right information to make those choices.

"I think our biggest worry will be [that] it is difficult enough for young people to be well informed at the moment."

Dr Stone voiced these concerns as Lord Browne's year-long review into university funding is expected to recommend that tuition fees should be increased to as much as £7,000 this week.

Increased tuition fees will mean that students will have to pay more for their degrees and borrow more money, which could lead to future debt problems.

In August, push.co.uk found that students who started university last year would leave with debts amounting to £23,200 and new students will owe £1,500 more.
